An in depth collaboration where I help your dreams come to life.

The Custom Process

  • Custom: Is it for Me?

There are generally two different reasons people come to me for custom. One is the “Reasonable Human Being” project and one is “There’s A Fancy Thing: This is All I Want”.

RHB- You know what you want. You know what you like. Typically it’s something you found in 1992 and it’s falling apart now after 30 years. They just don’t make things like they used to, am I right? Yes. I am. And so are you. We can build your wardrobe with quality garments in exactly your size.

Fancy- Self explanatory. You have a vision, you have an event. I’m here to create that vision for you. This is a very in depth process and requires a minimum of 6 months, project dependent.

  • Conception to Paper

The first step in the custom process is meeting one another to establish our goals. We will chat and you will share whatever information you may have already collected and I will give you a rough estimate. From there I will create a Pinterest board where we can continue our communication of ideas. I will sketch a variety of options for you to look through and collect links to viable fabric options. All the information will be entered in a google drive folder for you to reference.

  • Paper to Fabric

Once we have landed on a design and I drape in muslin to create a pattern. The design is then transferred from muslin to pattern paper, trued and prepared for cutting. Your muslin is then cut out and assembled. We will then have a fitting where I pin the muslin and we decide on any design changes. Those changes will be made to the pattern and ta-dah time to cut into the real fabric.

A muslin is a mock up garment that is made from a very inexpensive fabric, traditionally a cotton muslin.

  • Construction

During the design process we will decide on fabric, I will order the appropriate swatches and we will decide on the best options. Once our muslin adventures are over I will cut the design out and begin assembly. Over this process expect 2-5 fittings, we certainly will have a fitting before I start the finishing techniques!
